NORTON Town Council is offering a 40 percent discount to senior citizens on rates running for six months with registration ending on Friday.

Council spokesperson Mr Leeroy Kaponda said to qualify, one has to be 65 years or older, be a property owner in Norton and be up to date with their rates.

“Benefit is only for residential properties and one property only,” he said.

Norton residents welcomed the move, saying council should continue ensuring that older citizens were cushioned.

“Sometimes I struggle to pay bills, but I always pay as soon as I get money. I am excited that council has remembered us,” said Mrs Martha Mugove (66) of Katanga.

Sekuru Brighton Munyowe (68) of Maridale shared similar sentiments.

“I owed council a lot of money. I could not afford to pay the bills at once.I wish council allowed those who owe to clear their debts,” he said.

While others welcomed the move, some residents said they wished council could extend the offer to people with disabilities and child-headed households.
