From the makers of the magical film “Ice Age”, we have a thoroughly entertaining hour and a half of escapism from whatever ails you.
Approaching her 30th birthday, born in Brooklyn, New York, we have the lovely Anne Hathaway – a name she plucked from Shakespeare in the role of Brenda.
Brenda and her pet bird live quietly in a small American town. Dr Julio Montero the voice of Jesse Eisenberg, a specialist in rare birds and the resuscitation of their numbers, has learned of Brenda and her pet. He knows that he bird, a blue macaw, is the only male of the species alive.
He also knows that a female of the species lives in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His task to bring the two owners of the pets together and convince them to let their pets mate.
So much for the ostensible plot of this warm and inviting film. On the other hand, reading the minds of the film’s makers, I feel certain their principal intention was to find a way to lure us all down to Rio at Carnival time, and to expose us to what is perhaps the most festive time, in the most festive place, on the face of the Earth.
And they’ll get no complaint from me nor from you, I’m sure, if you have the good fortune to make your way to Eastgate and pass the most delightful hour and a half imaginable.
The film bears an age rating which permits anyone to see it. Oddly, and distressingly I give it as my opinion this works, here in Harare, to the film’s disfavour. Over the years, in questioning members of film audiences, and potential film-goers, it has been made clear to me that such a rating is a clear signal to a possible ticket buyer that the film will be bland and unexciting. A no-no to today’s sophisticates.
A real tragedy for all concerned if this attitude reduces attendance. At the performance of the film which I attended, mine was the only seat occupied.
