adminA furious Novak Djokovic eyeballed his own coach during the second set of his Australian Open final clash against Stefanos Tsitsipas – before winning in straight sets.
The Serbian had some stern words and even sterner looks for Goran Ivanisevic yesterday, even targeting the former World No.2 from the other side of the court on his way to winning a 28th consecutive game at the tournament.
Viewers were left shocked after seeing the 35-year-old fume at his own coaching box despite winning the first-two three as he won a 22nd Grand Slam singles title.
At one point Djokovic could be seen shouting up and asking what he needed to do to improve, and seemingly not liking the response.
One social media user said: “What’s up with Djokovic! Why is he continuously picking on Goran Ivanisevic. What the heck is he complaining for!”
A second wrote: “Not sure why Djokovic yells at Ivanisevic when he misses a shot. If I were Goran, I would quit!”
A third posted: “I wouldn’t want to be Goran Ivanisevic when Djokovic stares down at me.”
Djokovic won the opening set 6-3 and took the second 7-6 (7-4), despite angrily gesturing to his team when losing certain points against his Greek opponent, then won the third 7-6 (7-5).
Djokovic went into the final as a huge favourite having beaten Tsitsipas in his only previous Grand Slam final, at the French Open in 2021.
Alongside him was coach Ivanisevic, whom he has worked with since 2019, who was once a World No.1 in singles and picked up Wimbledon glory back in 2001.
Ivanisevic explained this week how the 2021 French Open final loss took it out of Tsitsipas, psychologically – with eyes on a repeat of the result.
He said: “I have seen him very nervous since the beginning of this tournament. It may be strange, but that match last year against Nole set him back.” – Daily Star.
