Nothing unusual about recent rains: Met Dept

“It is normal to have rainfall in May but it would be unusual if there are hailstorms and thunderstorms,” said Mr Tichaona Zinyemba, head of forecasting at the Met Department.

Rains fell in many parts of the country over the past week with some areas recording as much as 32mm.
Mr Zinyemba said the trend was normal as had been recorded in some previous years.

In 1988 some areas received more than 50mm of rain while in 1976 about 56mm were recorded over the same period.

The rains received in most parts of the country so far were higher than rainfall recorded over the same period last year.
“Last year we recorded less rainfall than we have done this year.”
