NPL title race remains wide open

Westside faltered at the top of the National Premier League (NPL) table as they went down to Gladiators by seven wickets at Mutare Sports Club on Sunday.

They scored 234 for nine wickets, with Tariro Makauyo making the top score of 53.

However, the Gladiators chased this down with ease, despite losing three wickets to Mashford Shungu for 69 runs.

Ashley Mufandauya was their hero of the day with a brilliant 143 not out off only 70 balls, with seven sixes and 19 fours.

He was helped by Panashe Taruvinga (57 not out) in an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 216.

At Highfields, Takashinga Patriots 2 have taken over at the head of the NPL standings following their seven-wicket victory over Strikers.

They bowled out Strikers for 157, with Ryan Simbi taking four wickets for 25.

They chased down that total for only three wickets, led by 84 not out from Tinashe Chimbambo.

At Kwekwe Sports Club, Rimuka defeated Bulawayo Athletic Club by seven wickets.

After opting to bat first, BAC made 219 for nine wickets, with Kudzai Banda their top scorer with 56.

Victor Chirwa starred with the ball as he took four wickets for 18 runs in his nine overs.

Rimuka lost three wickets for 68, but then Nyasha Mayavo (58 not out) and Tashinga Musekiwa (91 not out off 61 balls, with seven sixes and six fours, shared an unbroken partnership of 153 to win the match.

At Old Hararians Sports Club Rainbow defeated Rangers by four wickets in a closely contested NPL game.

Rangers batted first and put together a useful total of 228, with Matthew Welch making the top score of 52.

Rainbow lost early wickets, but Lavert Masunda, with 66, played the major role in taking them to a four-wicket victory.

Francis Sande completed the job, and had a good all-round performance, scoring 41 not out to follow bowling figures of three wickets for 21.

Eight matches into their maiden NPL season, the Knights are yet to taste victory as they suffered a 199-run defeat at the hands of Mbizo in their latest fixture at Kwekwe Sports Club on Saturday.

Batting first, Mbizo amassed 307 runs for seven wickets, with Isaac Danladi making the top score of 89.

They then bowled out Knights to another defeat, dismissing them for 109, with Jabulisa Tshuma taking three wickets for 27.

Amakhosi beat Scorpions by 59 runs in their NPL meeting at Masvingo Sports Club on Saturday.

Raymond Kasimo made the top score of 63 not out as Amakhosi, batting first, scored 224 for eight wickets.

Prince Kaunda then took five wickets for 38 as Scorpions were bowled out for 165, with Nelson Chimbirimbiri saving them from a worse fate with 46.
