The much-anticipated National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ)’s leisure train successfully completed its inaugural journey today, pulling into Mutare’s rail station at 1710hrs.
The train’s arrival marked the culmination of a trip that began in Harare and saw it making short stops in Marondera, Rusape and Headlands, where it picked up more passengers.
It also briefly stopped in Odzi, allowing travellers to further soak in the beauty of Manicaland’s landscape.
When the train arrived in Mutare, passengers were welcomed by a high-profile delegation, including Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbara Rwodzi; Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Joshua Sacco; Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza; and the newly-appointed NRZ board chairman, Dr Misheck Sibanda.
The inaugural trip marks a major milestone in preparations for the upcoming Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo that begins on Wednesday.
The expo aims to promote the country as a top tourism destination while exploring sustainable ways to expand the industry.
It will run under the theme “Devolving Sustainable Tourism Development – Our Future.”
The special rail service is a collaborative effort between the NRZ, the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.
