NSSA loses $11,2m land

The hyper-inflationary environment which the country experienced over the past decade saw NSSA failing to develop some of the land that it had acquired for housing stands.

NSSA general manager Mr James Matiza said the authority was in discussion with the local authorities to return the land.

“We had a 10-year development plan with the local authorities but we could not meet it, due to the hyper inflationary environment experienced in the country,” he said.

Matiza said Bulawayo, Rusape and Victoria Falls repossessed one stand each while Masvingo town repossessed two and Mutare repossessed three.

He said the authority was optimistic that the local authorities would return the land since they have always enjoyed good relations with them.

“We have not sat down with them on this one, but we hope to do that soon to get replacements. If we fail to get our land back, we will go to the courts,” he said.

At the peak of the economic recession in 2008 NSSA suspended housing projects such as the Glaudina Estate, Rusike in Marondera and the Commercial Centre in Bindura.

The authority also suspended refurbishment of NSSA House in Bulawayo as well as construction of a hotel in Beitbridge.

The macro-economic stability which the introduction of multiple foreign currencies in 2009 ushered in has enabled the authority to resume most of the projects that it had suspended. — New Ziana.
