FORMER South African fast bowler Makhaya Ntini is eager to bring a winning culture into the Zimbabwe national cricket team when he officially assumes the role of bowling coach next week.
Speaking at a Zimbabwe Cricket press conference to unveil him as a specialist coach for the senior national team at Queens Sports Club yesterday, Ntini vowed to bring change to the side.
“There will be a lot of changes and lot of happiness in Zimbabwean cricket. We are preparing for the World Cup and all those who think they will beat us will be swallowing their words,’’ said Ntini.
National team coach Davenell Whatmore said Ntini was a feared bowler during his playing days and gave opposition coaches a torrid time and he was proud to have someone like him in his camp.
ZC chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani announced that the 38-year-old Ntini had joined on a two-year deal and will start work next Tuesday. Mukuhlani disclosed that they were looking to improve the national team’s performance by engaging more technical support for Whatmore.
Ntini was engaged last month together with former Sri Lankan captain Marvan Atapattu as specialist coaches. Atapattu, who was hired as a batting coach for the national team’s tour of Bangladesh, had his tenure extended as the batsmen seemed to improve under his guidance, resulting in Zimbabwe recovering from 2-0 down to level the four-match Twenty20 International series 2-2.
