Numsa members to down tools

Johannesburg — The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) will go on an indefinite strike over wage increases from next week Tuesday in the metals and engineering sectors.
More than 220 000 Numsa members will down tools less than a week after the crippling five-month platinum wage strike ended. The strike will harm an already struggling economy which contracted 0,6 percent in the first quarter raising concerns the economy could go into recession.

Numsa is demanding a 12 percent wage increase, a one year agreement and a scrapping of labour broking, among other things. About 10 500 companies represented under the Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council had offered 8 percent, Numsa’s deputy general secretary Karl Cloete said yesterday.

Speaking yesterday after a three-day Numsa central executive committee meeting, Mr Cloete said the strike would be scheduled to coincide with a number of marches at factories across the country. — Bdlive.
