Nurse nabbed with medical drugs

A GENERAL nurse stationed at Birchenough Bridge Hospital was last week arrested for allegedly stealing medical drugs and equipment worth thousands of dollars at the hospital.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Enock Chishiri, confirmed the incident which occurred on February 7 at Birchenough Bridge Hospital and said the accused, Jabulani Mhere was assisting them with investigations.

Insp Chishiri said: “On February 7 at around 11pm, Mhere who is a nurse stationed at Birchenough Bridge Hospital maternity ward was seen driving his Toyota Noah vehicle with another accomplice who is still at large. The vehicle entered into Birchenough Bridge Hospital premises and on return the vehicle was stopped at main gate by security guards from Scaffbrook Security Company who then conducted a search in his vehicle. They discovered a box containing contraceptives pills.’’

The security guards interrogated Mhere and subsequently arrested him. They handed him over to the police for questioning. Police reacted swiftly and took Mhere to his place of residence where they searched his house.

An assortment of drugs and equipment was recovered and these included rolls pop bandage, malariabits, HIV test cards, SD biolime, 5ml predimisoline, parachets, pregnant test strips, 2,5ml baffer, cord clamps, swabs, blood lanset, surgical bides, adhesive dressings, giving sets, syringes, cummulars, vadelle tracar, niddles, a date stamp, FBC tubes,305×6 boxes of birth control pills,600mg praziquante tablets,1×400 mg Albentazole,1 cartem box, 400ml of gontrimoxazole,1x2mg galbotamol,1x300mg Tenofo, Lamixudine, favirenz,15 ville water for injection, Athropine, 1x2m promothezine, 1x500m Doxacillin,2x3mg Benzel pencillin,8x1m Depo,1 box containing Jabs Dop,Nifedipive,7x5mg Emalapile, Fansidar, Tabs ciprofloxacin, two packs of valded and three pairs of latex gloves.

“The accused alleges that he obtained the drugs from clinics in Buhera for outreach purposes,” said Insp Chishiri, adding that the street value of the stolen equipments and drugs could not immediately obtained.
