Nust Art Club challenges youth exodus narrative through art

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) Art Club is set to host the second edition of its annual art exhibition this Friday at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

Sponsored by Nust, the event will run under the theme: “Unravelling Zimbabwean Potential in Health, Innovation, Technology, Entertainment, and Lifestyle”.

Musa Musema, head of operations and events for the Art Club, said the theme aims to highlight the Zimbabwean story through the eyes of the youth.
“There’s a prevailing narrative that many young people are leaving the country, but we want to challenge that. Despite the challenges we face, we’re still the future of Zimbabwe, and we must take responsibility for shaping it,” he said.

He said that the exhibition provides a platform for young artists to showcase their talents and inspire creativity among their peers.
“These events are vital because they bring people and communities together. They give artists a space to connect, learn from one another, and grow their artistic abilities,” he added.
Reflecting on the exhibition’s growth, Musema noted that last year’s edition featured 15 artists, while this year’s event has attracted around 30 exhibitors.
“Our goal is to see this number grow even further in the coming years,” he said.

Attendees can expect a diverse showcase of visual artworks, a short film depicting youth life in Zimbabwe, and performances from emerging local artists.
“We encourage art enthusiasts and the community to come out and support young, budding talent,” Musema urged.
