THE National University of Science and Technology (Nust) has moved its upcoming 30th graduation ceremony pencilled in for Friday from the university campus to the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre (ZIEC) due to the onset of the rains.

Nust director of communications and marketing, Mr Thabani Mpofu, said the decision comes as a response to weather complications that could potentially disrupt the proceedings at the university venue.

He said the venue of the ceremony will be at ZIEC Hall 4.

“The move was necessitated by the current heavy rains expected to persist until the end of the week. We have moved to a bigger space where graduates and attendees can be accommodated,” he said.

Mr Mpofu said, the ceremony will begin with the commissioning of the late Professor Phineas Makhurane Technovation centre on campus.

“His Excellency and Chancellor President Mnangagwa will officiate at the event,” he said.

The President is expected to cap 3 201 graduands.

“We are celebrating the graduation of the first code of the Education 5.0 and as such the ceremony will run under the theme: ‘Celebrating Innovative Future Ready First Graduates of the Heritage-Based 5.0’,” said Mr Mpofu.

He said the university, known for its commitment to providing a premier educational experience, has made this shift to ensure the safety and comfort of its graduates, their families, and other attendees.

Mr Mpofu said weather challenges can lead to unforeseen complications such as the risk of rain or extreme heat, which could diminish the celebratory atmosphere of what is a momentous occasion for students.

“By moving to ZIEC, the university aims to provide a more controlled environment that enhances the experience for everyone involved,” he said.

Mr Mpofu said the graduation ceremony is a significant milestone for Nust students, marking the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.

He said graduates will don their caps and gowns as they receive their gradations, celebrating not only their individual achievements but also their collective accomplishments.

“The move to ZIEC, which is a well-equipped venue for large gatherings, will also allow for a larger audience, accommodating more family members and friends who wish to witness the celebration of their loved ones,” said Mr Mpofu.

He said in addition to the logistics, the timing of the ceremony remains unaffected.
Graduates will still gather at the originally planned time, and the ceremony will proceed according to the scheduled programme.

Mr Mpofu said Nust is ensuring that all necessary arrangements are in place at ZIEC, including audio-visual equipment, seating, and safety protocols to comply with any health regulations that may still be in effect.

He said Nust remains dedicated to delivering a graduation experience that honours the hard work and determination of its students.
