KUDAKWASHE Sibanda of National University of Science and Technology (Nust) won the second edition of the Hillside Open Tournament on Saturday. The event was held at the institution. Sibanda shrugged off competition from 92 competitors to lift the Chimhanzi Trophy.There was stiff competition for second position as three players were on six points with Makore Takawira of Zimbabwe Correctional Prison Services higher on bucholtz followed by Castro Sibanda of Nust and Junior Ndlovu of Bulawayo Chess Club.
Sizane High School ace Nomalungelo Mathe was crowned best lady with 4,5 points being tailed by Farleen Maswaya on 3,5 points.
Sifiso Ncube from Sizane High School was crowned best scholar.
Harare-based Mpumelelo Moyo was crowned Best Young player.
Bulawayo Chess Association publicity manager Russel Dzute said the level of competition exhibited was of high quality.
“Although the defending champion (Thabo Elisha) was absent, there was stiff competition, I’m happy with the standard of play exhibited.
“Thanks to the event organiser Moses Mutipforo, the tournament was a huge success, the attendance was good, we hope it will continue growing,” said Dzute.
