Nust to host colleges sports finals

NATIONAL University of Science and Technology (Nust) host the Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports Union (ZTISU) finals today.
The games were official opened yesterday by guest of honour Tuskers Chief Executive Officer Stanley Staddon. ZTISU games are played by three different associations of higher education, which are Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association (ZUSA), Zimbabwe Technical Colleges Sports

Association (TESAZ) and Zimbabwe Teachers Colleges Sport Association (ZITCOSA).

Most athletes have set their eyes in representing Zimbabwe in ZIZAMA games to be held in Malawi, Lilongwe in 24-29 August.

The games roared into life yesterday with track and field events taking centre stage at Nust Stadium.

As the norm the 10 000 metres men’s race was the first event of the tournament, which was won by ZITCOSA, Walter Hove in 31 minutes 49 seconds followed by the women’s 5000 metres won by TESAZ, Cathrine Vhareta in 20 minutes 30 seconds.

Itai Vambe (ZUSA) scooped the gold medal in the 100m with a time of 10.58seconds. He was followed                by Nyasha Charundura Nyasha (ZUSA) in 10.77 seconds.

Musikavanhu Leona (ZUSA) and Marine Hoglah (ZITCOSA) scooped gold and silver in 12.37 seconds and 13.22 seconds respectively in the women’s 100m final.
Leona repeated her magic in the women’s 200m by scooping gold in 24.83 seconds followed by Chashamba Caron (ZITCOSA) in 26.56 seconds.

Nyasha scooped gold in the men’s 200m in 22:25 seconds to make out for the 100m disappointment where he settled for silver.

The ZITSU president Martin Zibwi spoke highly of the finals and challenges in this year’s games and hopes the same challenge and spirit to prevail in the ZIZAMA games.

“So far so good, I can’t complain. I’m even happy that the competition has improved to the extent that the known runners cannot make it in defending their medals.

“We are confident that from Malawi we will bring back a reasonable number of medals,” said Zibwi.
