NATIONAL University of Science and Technology (Nust) won the Khami Prisons Chess Tournament held over the weekend.
The tournament was graced by six institutions and over 10 teams. Nust team A came out top after they shrugged off competition from Bulawayo City Council (BCC) who were second.
Zimbabwe Prison Service (ZPS) team B came third while their counterparts team A came fourth.

Bulawayo Chess Club spokesperson Moses Mutiforo said they were pleased to hold such an event with a high level of competition.
“As an association we are pleased to organise the first ever teams tournament at Khami and the quality of games was very high with players giving it their all,” said Mutiforo who encouraged women teams to partake in such events.  “Although we had so many teams, we did not manage to get any women teams, it is hoped that with time they will come aboard,” he said.

He also challenged schools to get involved in chess as well. Only Christian Brothers Colllege (CBC) took part in the tournament.
“We only had CBC, but we hope to get many students involved as much as we can,” he said.

During the tournament a committee that will spearhead the formation of a chess league was formed.
Mutiforo will head the finance committee while the constitutional committee will be headed by Russel Dzete. The developmental committee will be led by Nigel Chiadzwa with Brighton Duburo spearheading  the events organising committee.

Bulawayo Chess Association chairman Thabang Moyo said plans are underway to start the chess league next year.
“Plans are underway to start a league in 2014, we are just looking for a sponsor, so we are appealing to the cooperate world to support us,” said Moyo.

Zimbabwe Prison Service Matabeleland Sports Coordinator Samuel Nyahwa who was the guest of honour was pleased with the high turnout.
