MAKOKOBA’S Rebels FC won the 56th edition of the Bulawayo Amateur Football Association (Bafa) Townshend and Butcher Trophy after beating Golden Hotspurs 2-1 in a final played at Barbourfields outside grounds on Sunday. The Bafa final preceded two big matches in the main stadium where How Mine took on Black Rhinos and Highlanders played Triangle in the first round of the Mbada Diamonds Cup.
Rafael Ngosi of Rebels’ first half brace was enough to seal the victory for his team with Golden Hotspurs getting their consolation goal from Arnold Phinda in the dying minutes of the game.
It was sweet revenge for Rebels who lost last year’s final to the same opponents.
Rebels walked away with a complete kit and floating trophy while the runners-up Golden Hotspurs took home a kit without socks for their efforts.
Bafa vice-chairman Charles Chunda said the competition was a success. “All preparations went well and I am happy with the work done by the organising committee as they made sure that we had a successful tournament. As Bafa we are grateful to our sponsors who decided to give all top four teams kits,” he said.
Chronicle Nga beat Mpilo United 1-0 in the third place playoff and both teams received kits.
Townshend and Butcher managing director Peter Leondios whose business has been sponsoring the tournament for the past 56 years, vowed to continue sponsoring the tournament.
“It’s my love for sport that has kept me involved for such a long time and we are committed to continue sponsoring the competition. Our motto is “Whatever the game, remember the name” and that name is Townshend and Butcher,” said Leondios.
Bafa held their own hall of fame after trophy presentation where they honoured their longest partners with certificates and medals.
Townshend and Butcher was awarded with a medal and a certificate for being the oldest partner alongside former Bafa League sponsors Ingwebu Breweries and Zero Suppliers.
