POLICE have arrested a 28-year-old man from Nyamandlovu, Umguza District in connection with a fatal assault in Kensington, on the outskirts of Bulawayo, following a violent altercation at a local bar.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the arrest of Peace Nyathi of Binis in Nyamandlovu, over the death of Junior Moyo (34) of Kensington.
The incident occurred on 10 August at around 7:45 PM, when Moyo was drinking beer at a beer garden in Kensington.
“The suspect was in the company of Nyathi and another man identified only as Bheki, who is still at large. An altercation broke out between Moyo and the two men, and one of them struck Moyo on the forehead with an unknown object, leaving him with a cut,” said Insp Msebele.
After the confrontation, Moyo went home. The following day, he reported the assault to the police and was referred to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for treatment.
“The complainant was treated at UBH and referred to Mpilo Central Hospital, but he opted not to go. On 12 August, his condition deteriorated and relatives rushed him to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he died shortly after admission,” said Insp Msebele.
Nyathi was arrested on 13 August during a police raid at his workplace. A manhunt has been launched for the second suspect, Bheki.
Insp Msebele urged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully.
“We urge members of the public to solve their disputes amicably and avoid violence, especially when under the influence of alcohol,” she said.
