Zimbabwe fast bowler Newman Nyamhuri dedicated his Player-of-the-Match performance to the team’s collective fighting spirit after producing a decisive spell in the opening One-Day International.
The left-arm seamer was named Player-of-the-Match after spearheading Zimbabwe’s bowling attack with a match-winning performance on a pitch that offered significant assistance to the bowlers.
Nyamhuri scored a career-best 33 to push Zimbabwe from 70 for 8 to 141.
He went on to take two catches in the deep, before breaking Bangladesh’s 49-run fourth-wicket stand to open the floodgates for a memorable win as Zimbabwe successfully defended 141, beating Bangladesh by 25 runs.
Reflecting on the award, Nyamhuri said he was delighted to have contributed to the team’s success.
“I am quite happy, l did the job for my team,” said Nyamhuri after receiving the Player-of-the-Match award on Monday.
The young pacer revealed that Zimbabwe’s players had challenged each other to leave everything on the field, an approach that proved decisive as they overcame their opponents.
“We were telling each other we had to fight and put everything in the field,” said Nyamhuri.
He also credited his batting partner for helping him remain composed during a crucial stage of the match, saying the advice was to focus on one delivery at a time.
“He was telling me to focus ball by ball and to stay in the moment,” he said.
The seamer acknowledged that the conditions heavily favoured the bowlers throughout the contest, making disciplined bowling the key to success.
“The pitch was favouring bowlers, it was doing a lot,” said Nyamhuri.
