Nyandoro has signed a new one-year extension at Mamelodi Sundowns — effective on July 1 — with an option of a further year that essentially makes it a two-year deal.
Before signing the new contract he was on a deal that was due to expire on June 30 this year. With the new contract that he has just signed Nyandoro joins fellow countryman and midfielder Tinashe Nengomasha, who spent 12 years at Kaizer Chiefs before moving to BidVest Wits at the beginning of this season.
Actually Nyandoro will become only the fourth foreigner player to have completed a decade and played over 300 games by the time he completes his 10 years at Chloorkop in June next year.
Moroka Swallows’ Nigerian goalkeeper Greg Etafia and retired Kenyan Musa Otieno — now assistant coach at Santos where he also played — are the only other foreigners in the South African Premier Soccer League to have also reached that rare mark.
Nyandoro arrived at Sundowns in June 2004 from the now-defunct Zimbabwean side AmaZulu and has never played for any other club since then.
The seemingly ageless Warriors international could have moved to England seven years ago when he was at the peak of his career and went for trials at Sheffield United.
The 33-year-old midfielder who has 87 caps for the Warriors has played the most games of all players in the current squad at Sundowns.
It has also emerged that Sundowns will grant Nyandoro a further extension to his deal on condition that he would have played a certain percentage of games for the club in the coming year.
Given the manner in which Nyandoro has defied his age and acquitted himself well for Pitso Mosimane’s side, the Brazilians could yet retain their former captain on their books for two more seasons.
Nyandoro is also one of three Zimbabweans on Sundowns’ books with the others being the former CAPS United and Warriors pair of defender Method Mwanjali and striker Nyasha Mushekwi
During his time at Sundowns, Nyandoro, a versatile player has won the league title twice, the Nedbank Cup and the SAA Supa8 although he has had to endure the last five years without adding any winner’s medal to his glittering trophy cabinet.
Atlhough he has stiill not called time on his inertantional carrer and remains available for the Warriors Nyandoro has been overlooked by interim coach Klaus Dieter Pagels along with a host of other older players with the German coach setting his sights on rebuilding the national team from younger players.
The Warriors will fly out to Egypt today for a World Cup African Zone Group G qualifier against the Pharaohs in Alexandria on Tuesday night. — CAJ News/ Sports Reporter.
