THE 2023 edition of the Nyanga District Agricultural Show held last week on Saturday was a resounding success, with farmers showcasing both traditional and exotic produce.

The event ran under the theme “Developing Nyanga Community through Sustainable Agriculture.”
Guest of honour and Chief Director in the Ministry of Lands, Water, Fisheries and Agriculture, Professor Obert Jiri spoke about Government’s smart agriculture policy.

“As Government, we are emphasising on the issue of agro-ecological matching, meaning that crops should be grown in natural regions where they best perform.

“Regions one, two and three shall be the areas where maize production will be maximised, while regions four and five should not focus on producing maize. Seed houses should also distribute seeds according to the natural regions. Farmers are thereby encouraged to seek advice from their Agritex officers before planting to get adequate information on the weather patterns in their respective areas. If we listen to advice from experts, we will surely achieve better yields,” said Professor Jiri.

Sorghum and rapoko will be the main crops for natural regions four and five.

Professor Jiri was impressed by Nyanga’s booming horticulture industry and farming exhibitions.

“There should be exports of horticultural products from Manicaland to different parts of the country and outside the country. Nyanga is one of the mainstays of horticulture. Our assessments revealed that the province did very well last year and recorded a grain surplus and should continue producing more crops.

“Manicaland is gifted with different agrological regions such that noone will die of starvation in the province,” said Professor Jiri.

Nyanga Show Society chairman, Major Shepherd Gurure said: “The show was a resounding success.
“Our greatest wish is to continue partaking in sustainable agriculture. We also want to ensure that we get a place to host this event near Nyanga Town to attract more exhibitors and bridge the gap between farmers and consumers.”

Mrs Mary Machingauta walked away with an assortment of prizes that include a motorbike courtesy of Nyanga South legislator and Zanu PF Politburo member, Cde Supa Mandiwanzira, an ox-drawn cart, a wheelbarrow, sugar beans, seed maize and 50kg Compound D fertiliser.
