The Nyarumwe Irrigation Scheme in Mashonaland Central is nearing completion and is expected to bring 100 hectares of land under full crop production, in line with Government’s drive to expand irrigation and strengthen food security, Mazowe Central legislator Dr Maxmore Njanji has said.

Contributing to the debate on President Mnangagwa’s State of the Nation Address delivered last month, Dr Njanji said the scheme represents a significant step toward achieving the national irrigation target of 496 000 hectares as part of efforts to climate-proof agriculture.

He said work was being expedited in the Howard area to ensure the irrigation project becomes fully operational within the shortest possible time.

“On the same note, our efforts in Mazowe Central remain cognisant of the national target of 496 000 hectares of irrigation in the drive to build toward climate proofing agriculture,” said Dr Njanji.

“To that extent, we are in the process of expediting the full establishment of Nyarumwe Irrigation Scheme in the Howard area, which upon its full operationalisation will see 100 hectare of land under irrigation and impacting local food security.”

Dr Njanji also commended President Mnangagwa for the Pfumvudza/Intwasa Inputs Scheme, which is set to benefit three million households nationwide and continues to play a critical role in ensuring food security.
