LUNGILE Nyathi and Mutsa Gwara were on target as Southern Region Division One Soccer League leaders Amagagasi beat ZRP Bulawayo 2-0 to extend their unbeaten run to eight games.
Amagagasi have amassed 22 points, one point ahead of second placed Bantu Rovers, who were the league’s biggest winners of the weekend with a 3-0 thumping of army side Indlovu Iyanyathela.
The Victoria Falls side’s coach Zibonele Ncube was happy that his strikers Nyathi and Gwara were on target.
“What we’ve been working on is to get our scoring combinations right and it’s good to see the strikers hitting the back of the net. The other positive thing to note is that we’re managing to pick points, which also lifts players’ confidence,” Ncube.
Besides sitting at the top of the table, Amagagasi are the league’s best scorers with 17 goals from eight outings at an average of 2.1 goals per match.
Despite former Premier Soccer League side Rovers breathing down their neck, Ncube says Amagagasi are not feeling any heat at all.
“We’re not worried about how other clubs are playing. What is key for us is to control the controllable by winning our games rather than spending time thinking about how other teams play,” said Ncube.
Rovers, who are joint favourites with Amagagasi, are also being diplomatic about their championship hopes, with coach Johannes Ngodzo saying: “We’re work in progress and it’s good to see the youngsters improving with every game.”
The Rovers’ youngsters showed character to stand against the physically superior Indlovu Iyanyathela players.
Rovers’ three goals came from seasoned forward Lenience Mpofu, Young Warriors striker Bukhosi Sibanda and Obriel Chirinda, who was playing his first game of the season after an injury layoff.
Perennial campaigners ZPC Hwange, who are third on the table, played to a 0-0 draw with Ntabazinduna, while Victoria Falls Tigers continued with their steady rise by beating Makomo 1-0.
Two weeks ago, Tigers anchored the table with three points from four games, but they’re now ninth with nine points following their 1-0 win over struggling Makomo, who suffered their sixth defeat from eight games.
