Nyathi, Tshabangu in rare show

CELEBRATED dub poet, musician and author Albert Nyathi is set to join forces with Lwazi Tshabangu this Saturday at Cresta Jameson Hotel where they will stage “Home Away from Home”.
“This is my first public performance in a long time. Yes, perhaps, except just three weeks or so ago with brother Tuku at his birthday celebrations where I appeared briefly with him on stage.

“We are bringing the rich cultural heritage of Bulawayo to Harare. So it is home in Harare away from home in Bulawayo. We both come from Bulawayo and we both have lived in Harare for a long time.

“As for me, it has been 25 years, since my college days in 1988 and those in Harare will enjoy the richness of Bulawayo’s cultural heritage. While those originally from Bulawayo will sing along with nostalgia,” said an elated Nyathi.

“I suppose this is testimony to my hatred of pungwe (marathon) shows. A show should be 90 minutes and I think my international tours really spoilt me. I cannot do an all-night show.”

The “Senzeni Na” hitmaker said the show was due to public demand. He said when Lwazi approached him about the gig he was more than prepared.

“Next year is the 20th anniversary of Senzeni Na? So Lwazi and I through this show are preparing for the national tour next year.
“I have done better stuff than Senzeni Na? But people still hold on to that one,” he chuckled.

Nyathi said the weekend’s show was reminiscent of the late 1990s when he staged a gig alongside his nephew, US-based Lovemore Majaivana.
