Nyati traps his target

Highway to Success
THE last time we heard that each time Nyati visited the Takundwas, he made sure to bring presents for Sofia. Sometimes he would bring an expensive bar of chocolate. Sofia soon learnt that Nyati’s visits and generous offers were driven by other motives.
Sofia innocently accepted those gifts at the beginning, but as they kept flooding in, she began to see through Nyati’s intentions. She had never used perfume before and did not need it anyway. Nyati pleaded with her to accept the perfume but Sofia remained adamant until he forcibly placed the little bottle of perfume into her palms. Nyati hides his evil intentions by asking Sofia if the police have brought any useful information about her little sister Tabitha. When Nyati leaves he offers to bring her a pair of shoes.

But Sofia declines making it clear that he does not need to. As she was still furiously protesting, she peeped out of the doorway only to see Nyati’ s brand new Mercedes Benz gliding off. She felt a wave of anger creeping into her blood. It became clear to her that the old man was definitely after her. She told herself that Nyati should be mad to think such a thing could ever happen. Here is a sugar daddy chasing after a young girl. Nyati was old enough to be her grandfather. Sofia was about to smash the little bottle on to the cement floor when her mother walked in.

Sofia’s mother, Fatima, was shocked to discover that Nyati had all along been bringing her daughter an assortment of things like bras and chocolate bars. She concurred with her daughter that he should be absolutely mad. He wanted to make Sofia his eighth wife. Fatima suggested that they should give all those things to Takundwa to pass them on to his friend Nyati. Sofia was blunt about them saying her father can wear those underpants and dresses if he wanted.

Two days later Takundwa came back hungry claiming that he had taken the presents back to Nyati. He added that Nyati had promised never again to waste his money buying presents for people who were rich enough to return presents. Was it true that he had returned the presents, or it explains his drunkenness that he sold those presents and used the proceeds to buy beer? Two weeks down the line, Sofia is sent into a snare by her father Takundwa. He sent her to Nyati’s office with a letter. He was too busy “balancing” the books for the tuck-shop.

Talk of a father who uses his daughter as a bait to get riches from elderly rich men. He does not consider his daughter’s feelings. When Sofia arrived at Nyati’s office, it was clear that he had been expecting her. It was clear to Sofia that her father and Nyati had pre-arranged that meeting. She was immediately suspicious. Nyati was not interested in the letter Sofia brought from her father. Sofia was uncomfortable in Nyati’s office and wanted to leave immediately. Nyati stops her from leaving claiming there are a lot of things he would like to show her in the office asking her if she did not like working in the office.

When Sofia tells Nyati that she wants to go home he says he will personally make sure that she reaches home safely. A wolf in a sheep’s skin indeed. Nyati tells Sofia that he wants to offer her a job at his office. He reminds Sofia that she once told him that she wanted to be a teacher. Her positive response to that gives Nyati the chance to strike. He tells her that teachers earn a mere three thousand dollars a month. He offers her three times more if she comes to work for him the following day.

Sofia is tempted to ask what kind of job he wants her to do. Nyati is unclear about the job saying he would find something for her. Nyati settles her fears when he tells her that he has a special job in mind for her when she says she has never worked before. What job is that? Sofia smells a rat and asks what kind of a job that is. Sofia is offered a job to start the following day. When asked if she is not hungry she declines.

Nyati had struck the right cord. The offer he gave to Sofia was too tempting to ignore. Sofia says: “Getting a job so easily, a highly paying one for that matter! How could I ignore such an offer? I knew very well that jobs were now very difficult to come by. Highly qualified university graduates were roaming the streets for more than a year in search of a job. These were the days of retrenchments. Getting a job was the same as striking gold.”

She goes on to say that she had already started dreaming about how she would spend her first salary, nine thousand dollars. She would give half of it to her mother and would spoil herself with a lot of fashionable dresses.

However, even though her head was wheeling in dream and excitement, she could still sense the trap she was walking into. She did not ask for the job. Why not give the job to all those unemployed people with qualifications who are looking for jobs? Was he kind? But if he was so kind and generous, how come he was not so kind to others? Read on to find out what happens next.
