BULAWAYO Chiefs coach John Nyikadzino remains calm and composed as his side edges closer to promotion, even as questions surrounding striker Anesu Saiti’s registration threaten to overshadow their campaign.
Chiefs tightened their grip on the Zifa Southern Region Division One title race with a commanding 5-0 victory over Nust on Saturday, extending their lead to seven points with just four matches remaining. Saiti netted twice in the match, underlining his importance to the team — but also reigniting scrutiny over a registration dispute that could influence the championship outcome.
Rival clubs Nkayi United and Hwange FC have challenged Saiti’s eligibility, alleging that he played for both Bulawayo City and Bulawayo Chiefs within the same half of the season — a potential breach of league regulations. The matter is now under review by the Zifa disciplinary committee.
Nyikadzino, however, maintains that the club has followed proper procedures.
“All I know is at Chiefs we play players that are registered. I’m impressed and excited with the way the team played. The boys really came to the party. The result is a big step toward our goal, which is to get promoted to the top-flight league,” he said.
That goal is now within reach. Hwange were held to a 1–1 draw by Megawatt, while Nkayi United played out a goalless stalemate against Casmyn, leaving Chiefs firmly in control with 67 points. Hwange trail on 63, and Nkayi on 60.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Saiti’s case, there is a palpable sense of renewal and transition at Chiefs. Under Nyikadzino’s guidance, the club has rebuilt, blending seasoned campaigners with a new generation of talent determined to restore Bulawayo’s presence in the top tier. Their recent performances reflect growing confidence, not distraction.
For Nyikadzino, the focus remains firmly on the pitch — not the boardroom. The veteran coach, no stranger to league drama, exudes belief that his players will finish the job they’ve started.
“We are not looking at what’s happening elsewhere. Our job is to win matches and let the rest take care of itself,” he said.
