THE headmaster of Chiwere Secondary School in Odzi, who had lost the school’s 2025 Ordinary Level results to robbers in Dangamvura, breathed a huge sigh of relief after the documents were recovered from a refuse bin in the suburb.
Thanks to the swift reaction of police officers from Dangamvura Police Station, one of the suspects was apprehended soon after the report was made, leading to the recovery of the stolen property.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed both the robbery and the recovery of the results slips along with other items.
He explained that the headmaster, Tizai Gwazhi (49), lost the ZIMSEC O-Level results slips following a violent robbery in Dangamvura on Monday evening. Gwazhi, who had just collected the results from ZIMSEC offices in Mutare, had stopped at a bar in the city’s Central Business District for drinks before heading to a friend’s home in Area 16.
On the way, he was attacked by two assailants who robbed him of the results slips and his cellphone.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said police received a tip-off that MacCthy Tshuma of Gimboki South, Dangamvura had been seen selling an Infinix cellphone matching the description of Gwazhi’s stolen device.
Police officers quickly moved in and arrested Tshuma at his residence, House Number 13648, Gimboki South.
Tshuma led police to the recovery of the cellphone, which he had already sold at MaPipe.
He also directed them to House Number 35, Area 3, where he and his accomplice, only known as Maradona, had dumped the stolen results slips in a rubbish bin. Several other school-related documents were also retrieved from the bin.
Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka narrated the incident: “On January 19, 2026, at around 10pm, near ZAOGA Church in Area 3, Dangamvura, Gwazhi, headmaster of Chiwere Secondary School in Odzi, was robbed of the school’s O-Level results, cash book, fees application forms, and his personal Infinix cellphone by two unidentified men.
“Earlier that day, Gwazhi had visited ZIMSEC offices in Mutare to collect the 2025 Ordinary Level results for his school. He collected the documents at around midday and later attended a results evaluation workshop at the same offices, which ended at 5pm.”
After the workshop, Gwazhi allegedly went to a bar in Mutare’s Central Business District, where he consumed three quarts of beer.
Around 7pm, he boarded a commuter omnibus to Dangamvura, intending to spend the night at a friend’s home in Area 16.
However, he was unfamiliar with the route. He claimed that he asked the conductor to drop him at the Area 16 turn-off, but the conductor forgot, and the vehicle proceeded to MaPipe in Gimboki.
Forced to disembark at MaPipe, Gwazhi decided to walk to Area 16.
When he reached ZAOGA Church in Area 3, two men suddenly emerged from a nearby maize field. One tripped him from behind, causing him to fall. The assailants manhandled him and snatched his satchel. Though he tried to resist, he was overpowered, and the robbers fled into the darkness with the bag.
The stolen satchel contained the O-Level results, an Infinix cellphone, a checked short-sleeved shirt, his national ID, the school date stamp, an ink pad, the cash book, fees application forms, and an envelope with work-related documents and leave forms. The total value of the stolen property was estimated at $93.
After the ordeal, Gwazhi sought refuge at the church, where he spent the night.
He reported the matter to ZRP Dangamvura the following morning, and police attended the scene.
