STOCKHOLM – US President Barack Obama left Sweden Thursday for a G20 summit in Russia where he will try to bridge divisions over his push for strikes against the Syrian regime’s alleged use of chemical weapons. His two-day visit to Stockholm centred mainly on Syria, as he seeks broad international support for punitive strikes after securing support from a key Senate committee.
The US leader held bilateral talks with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt on Wednesday, and later attended a dinner with Reinfeldt and the prime ministers of Denmark, Iceland and Norway and the president of Finland.
The Nordic leaders have repeatedly said they would only support a military intervention in Syria if it were backed by a UN mandate. – AFP.
