OBERT Tongai Moyo Jnr will officially launch his debut album “Dhewa Venyu” next month.
The budding sungura singer is son to the late Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo.
His six-track album was released in December.
“The album was released in 2021, but we had not officially unveiled it to our fans. Thus, in February, we are going to have an official launch and we hope this will further push the album on the market,” he said.
“The launch will be done on Radio Zimbabwe on a date to be announced soon. Utakataka fans should expect nothing more than the best from us.”
Songs on the album include “Mbinga”, “Dhewa Venyu”, “My Moyo”, “Tsoka Yerudo”, “Titambe Ngoma” and “Uriko”.
Obert’s controversial single “Cain and Abel” was voted number 15 on the 2020 ZBC TV Top 50 videos of the year.
He also intends to keep his father’s legacy alive.
“My father was known for his love for fashion and, above all, his good music. It is my duty as one of his successors to make sure that the legacy lives on. He set the standards high for us and we will try to match and surpass them if possible,” he added.
Critics argue that some of Obert’s songs, particularly singles “Dhewa Venyu” and “Cain and Abel”, speak of his brother Peter Moyo.
Both musicians use the name Utakataka for their backing groups, though Obert suffixes 4X4 to the band’s name.
“Utakataka is an inheritance that was left behind by our departed patriarch and everyone should benefit from it,” he added.
