THE police have urged drivers ferrying school children home for the holidays to be cautious on the roads to avoid accidents. In a statement, national police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said there was need for road users to observe road rules and regulations.
“We would like to urge drivers who will be carrying pupils from various centres to unite with their parents to exercise caution on the roads and safeguard lives,” she said.
“Drivers should not speed and must observe all road rules and regulations. Above all, they should not overtake in situations which do not permit them to do so.”
Snr Asst Comm Charamba appealed to drivers to be observant and look out for animals and other obstacles on the roads as they were also a major contributor towards road carnage.
She said adequate measures had been put in place to ensure children’s safety during this time.
“We are going to increase roadblocks and monitor speeding vehicles during this period,” she said. “Vehicle patrols will be carried out and we will also be on the lookout for those who flout road rules and regulations.”
