October is Pink!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a national campaign dedicated to highlighting the fight against the disease and the importance of early detection.
The World Health Organisation notes that the month is a time to honour millions of lives affected and to reaffirm commitment to equitable screening and care.
In Zimbabwe, breast cancer is now the second most common cancer among women, with 1 807 new cases recorded out of 11 220 cancers in women in 2022. Screening is the best defence: detecting tumours early greatly improves treatment options and survival.
Community pink-ribbon events and education campaigns help spread this message, encouraging regular check-ups and offering solidarity and hope as understanding and support can help people with breast cancer “feel stronger”.
Beyond the disease itself, a breast cancer diagnosis often carries a heavy emotional burden. Patients commonly describe feeling anxious, sad or even angry after diagnosis.
Treatment side effects such as hair loss or surgery can also affect self-image and self-esteem.
Many survivors live with constant worry, asking, “Is my cancer back?” whenever they feel a new ache or pain. Mental health experts note that people with breast cancer are at higher risk for anxiety and depression.
Acknowledging these struggles and seeking help early can make a significant difference.
Treating breast cancer means caring for the whole person, mind as well as body. Many cancer centres now include mental health professionals on staff and offer support groups or counselling for patients and families.
Recent research shows that cognitive-behavioural therapy can significantly improve mental well-being and quality of life during cancer treatment.
Peer support groups or online communities help survivors feel less alone, and public campaigns encouraging people to share their stories can break down stigma. By integrating emotional support with medical care, this approach ensures breast cancer patients receive comprehensive care for both body and mind.
