INCUMBENT Triathlon Zimbabwe president Ross O’Donoghue is hoping to retain his post when the association holds elections at their Annual General Meeting next month in Harare.
The AGM will be held at Borrowdale Brooke Golf Club on June 15 where the delegates hope to deliberate on various issues, including constitutional amendments, ahead of the start of the 2024-2025 season.
The meeting will among other issues see the election of a new board.
O’Donoghue is seeking re-election as well as vice president Pamela Fulton, treasurer Shingi Pswarayi and fourth member Kevin Nicholson.
And he believes another term of office will allow the board to complete some of the initiatives introduced in the previous season.
The term of office is one year.
“So, generally it’s election of the board. So I am going to be standing for presidency again. I heard all my other members on the board will be standing for their positions. They have indicated that they will stand for re-election.
“So, I am hoping that we are going to have a few changes in the board because we are a young board and a new board.
“We have put in a few things in place and I hope we can continue to grow. To try and implement any growth in 12 months is quite hard especially all being a set of new members to the board.
“So, we are hoping that some of the ideas and energies that we put into last season can now be grown into fruition in the coming season,” said O’Donoghue.
Some of the programmes they have been looking at include promoting triathlon in schools as they seek to grow the sport.
Also on the agenda is revisiting the current term of office.
“It’s something that we are looking at now under guidance from SRC (Sports and Recreation Commission). But in as long as I have been involved in triathlon it’s been a 12-months term.
“We are looking at trying to extend that because what we have seen and what SRC has told us is that you can’t achieve that much in 12 months as a new board.
“So, what we are looking at doing as well, because it’s a voluntary board, it’s quite difficult to get people to commit for the long term but if we could do a four-year-term . . . that is what we would like to look at. That is something that will be on the agenda for the AGM this year.
“And we will look at introducing something along those lines,” said O’Donoghue.
Nomination of executive board candidates’ forms should be submitted by June 7 and the short-list will be published on June 8.
Besides the executive board, they will also be looking at the appointments for the various commissions that include the development commission, technical commission, schools commission, athletes commission, selection committee, tour management committee as well as marketing and sponsorship.
