Of hip hop, winning souls to God

They say hip hop has lost its course but one thing for sure is that it always comes to its roots and back into the hearts of people. It is a culture of expression and collective consciousness. Youthful rapper Nigel Maritiju has decided to take it to the next level by spreading word of Christ’s Kingdom through the widely popular genre.

Otherwise known as Slick (Simply Living in Christ’s Kindness), the second year engineering student from Harare Institute of Technology is making his presence felt on the local music scene.

With a six-track debut album, “Blessed” on the airwaves, Slick has found himself on popular chat shows among them the Overdose Hip Hop Show on Power FM.

“I am a young Christian artiste who is passionate about winning souls. My aim is to glorify God and be a minister of his word through hip hop music,” he said.

While some might object to his choice of music, Slick maintains that hip hop is his most ideal instrument to touch the hearts of believers and non-believers.

It has been a part of him from his early years.

“I grew up listening to the likes of Eminem, TI and locally I liked peeps like Dave Chifunyise and Mau Mau.

“But then my lyrics reflect my faith. In fact, I am working to be a global ambassador of God’s Kingdom through hip hop music” he said.

Slick might be getting recognition for his music now but he has been making an upward trend for a while.

He has been in the game for years writing songs when he was in the Fifth Grade.

His first recording was in 2009 with Alvan Kof Dollargettaz Studios.

His hits “Team for Jesus”, “Ndoda” and “Mune Nyasha” are now favourites with his growing audience at Christian events and other functions that he performs at.

As for plans of the future, the rising star said:

“I see myself as an artiste whose music will be a ministry characterised by serious soul winning and demonstration of God’s word,” he said.
