Of local artistes and New Year’s resolutions

Bongani Ndlovu Entertainment Correspondent
“TRUE, I talk of dreams, which are the children of an idle brain, begot of nothing but vain fantasy, which is as thin of substance as the air.”
These words by Mercutio in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet aptly describe what some Bulawayo personalities think of New Year’s resolutions.

Bulawayo news makers in the entertainment industry said there was no reason for one to make New Year’s resolutions as they were just dreams or wish lists.  Others said it was all up to God to guide them through 2014. Playwright Raisedon Baya said resolutions are for people who dream and have no plans. He said such people expect their dreams to come true like manna from heaven.

Surprisingly he wrote what seemed to be a resolution on his Facebook wall: “Opening my 2014 year with two plays, The Arrangement and Things My Aunts Never Told Me. Scripts already done, working on casting and rehearsals soon!!!!! Woza 2014!”

Renowned dramatist, author, arts director, founder and director of Amakhosi Theatre Productions, Cont Mhlanga said talking about New Year’s resolutions was not useful as they were a bunch of dreams that people never keep.  Nevertheless, he is looking forward to Amakhosi reintroducing its theatre, dance and orchestra branches that went defunct in 2005.

“We want to revive Amakhosi Theatre, Amakhosi Dance and Amakhosi Orchestra. These arms were there and put Bulawayo as the cultural hub of the country. Unfortunately when the country’s economy went on a downturn the branches we had also fell by the wayside.

“This greatly affected the people who were in the industry negatively,” Mhlanga said.
Comic sensation, Clive Chigubhu, believes in New Year’s resolutions and he has kept those that he made last year.  He said the key was to write them down and pray for them.

“Last year I wanted to break barriers and new ground and I managed to do so as I went to South Africa,” said Chigubhu.
He said he wants to work on a show named Comic called Clive that is inspired by American comic Dave Chapelle. Chigubhu added he shall be painting the down red with his presence saying: “Lingangisoli lingangibona ngiphandliwe.” Fingers Modelling Agency head Sarah Mpofu said looking back at 2013 she was grateful that she became a grandmother.

She said unlike others she managed to keep her resolutions by the Grace of God.  She said she would be spending New Year’s Day with friends and family.

Bulawayo kwaito/hip hop artiste Lwazilwenkosi “Mcheznana” Skuza said his resolution for this year was to release singles and albums more consistently.

He said he kept last year’s resolution of buying property.
“I bought a stand this year and that was part of my New Year’s resolutions.  I have challenged myself not to starve my fans of music. I will up my game in terms of releasing more consistently,” said Mcheznana.

He said those who thought that he would leave the wise waters were greatly deceived.
Marabi singer, Jeys Marabini said he would be working even harder on his musical career this year.

He said following the successful holding of the musical fete, Bulawayo Comes Alive, he would be working on putting up a grander show.
“My focus is to work on my upcoming album as from January 2. As for the Bulawayo Comes Alive Show we will be hosting another bigger show following the success of last year,” said Jeys.

He said he would be spending New Year’s Day at home with family.
