OLD Hararians Sports Club rugby team are hosting a charity pre-season tournament today featuring seven men’s teams and an assortment of ladies sides to benefit victims of the Tokwe-Mukosi floods in Masvingo Province.
Clubs will play a shorter format of 15s rugby, a full match will be 30 minutes with 15 minutes per half and a two-minute break in between the halves.
Old Hararians skipper Tichafara Makwanya said this was a small gesture from the rugby community in helping out thousands of people affected by the floods.
“The OH rugby committee is organising it and the idea to support the flood victims came about through realising that the many families are still displaced and in as much as we always looking for help as the rugby fraternity we need to do more for those around us and have a little social responsibility.”
“We’ve always had a pre-season tournament for as long as I can remember and we’ve had Lusaka rugby club coming down but sadly they can’t make it this time.
“This one is a little closer to our humane side because it is all about fellow Zimbabweans that are suffering,” said Makwanya.
Players and fans are pooling resources and collecting donations in cash or kind, with all proceeds from gate takings going towards the cause.
There is no official corporate sponsor apart from influential individuals who are part of the rugby community.
