OH on top of their game

Boys move into pole position with 29 points after collecting maximum points, which included a bonus point, to go four points ahead of Old Georgians Sports Club.

Despite being inactive, as they had three players away with the Cheetahs at the Sevens World Cup tournament in Moscow, Russia, the Dragons remained in the top two as Western Panthers suffered a humbling 7-89 loss to Harare Sports Club.

The win was good enough to take the Red Lions to third with 22 points on the league standings as Sports Club were largely driven by utility back Taddy “Boxer” Whata who scored more than 35 of the Lions points on Saturday afternoon.

Whata’s contribution constituted of an 85.7 kicking success rate as he converted 12 of the 13 conversions, missed one penalty and also added three tries to put 39 points to his name against the Bulawayo side.

Teammate and the league top try scorer, Stephan Hunduza, ran in three tries as he brought up his tally for the season to 10.
Josh Mutasa, Shayne Makumbe, Tonderai  Chigumbura and Sharks Academy centre, Kudzia Mashawi, all crossed the whitewash in the first half to give their side a healthy 33-0 lead and it was in this half that Whata missed one conversion.

Hooker Jubilee Banwha, Philimon Machisa and towering lock Ashely Mabhena all weighed in a try a piece in the second half as the Harare giants made light work of Panthers who only got their consolation converted try through Terrence Ncube George Hlatshwayo.

“Today was a great day for me and it is the first time that I actually got to score three tries in one match and I hope I can carry it on throughout the season,” said Whata.
“I have been working very hard and want to score more tries this season, I have a personal training programme and aim to be the best.

“I love playing with Boxer (Whata), he is a very quick player and all the things we practise as a pair will always show in games like today,” said Hunduza.

The Bulawayo derby between bitter rivals Mat’land Warriors and Old Miltonians failed to produce a winner as it ended in a stalemate at Hartsfield Rugby Grounds. Mat’land Warriors were leading 15-8 going into the second half, but OMs tightened their defence and sharpened their attack as they scored a converted try to level matters with the Warriors who failed to add any points in the second half.

Results: Harare Sports Club 89, Western Panthers 7; Old Hararians 66, Zvishavane Bulls 8; Matland Warriors 15, Old Miltonians 15.
