REGISTRATION has opened for this year’s Old Mutual 10km Fun Race set for Nkulumane Complex in Bulawayo on Sunday.
The race is part of the company’s social corporate responsibility programme. In an interview yesterday, the Bulawayo Athletics Board secretary Dailes Bingadadi confirmed that registration had started and they were excited to host the Old Mutual event.
“As a board we are happy with the development. There was a time when the race was in doubt but Old Mutual have confirmed that the race is on and as much as we are happy, I am sure that the athletes are also looking forward to the competition. Registration is on and it is our hope that Bulawayo athletes will register in their numbers and make this event a success.
“Registration is free and it is done at Old Mutual’s office at Nkulumane Complex and closes on Saturday,” Bingadadi said.
Olympian Wirimai Juwawo won last year’s edition of the Old Mutual 10km Fun Race after clocking 29 minutes 50 seconds and for his effort he took home $600.
Freda Rebecca Mine’s George Majaji, who was a threat to Juwawo, came home second in 30 minutes 06 seconds and won himself $400 while Elmore Sibanda was third in 30 minutes 12 seconds.
Jacob Mugomeri ran 31 minutes 03 seconds to claim fourth position while Trust Chademana settled for fifth position after crossing the line in 31 minutes 07 seconds.
In the women’s category, Rutendo Nyawora of Freda Rebecca Mine came first in 34 minutes 38 seconds beating a field that had last year’s Kujatana Nkubotu winner Constance Nyasango and veteran Tabitha Tsatsa.
Olivia Chitate was the first runner-up in 35 minutes 10 seconds with Nyasango third in 36 minutes 30 seconds while Helen Chimudo finished fourth in 37 minutes 21 seconds.
Faith Nyasango finished fifth in 38 minutes.
Forty-year-old Tsatsa crossed the line in 39 minutes 26 seconds and won the veterans’ category prize.
Before last year’s edition which attracted a number of seasoned athletes, the Old Mutual 10km road race had last been staged in 1999.
Bingadadi said prizes for the race would be announced during the week.
“We are meeting the sponsors tomorrow (today) to clarify the prize schedule. Athletes will know what is at stake during the week but what we have been assured is that they are maintaining same categories as last year’s event,” said Bingadadi.
She said primary school athletes would compete in the 5km race.
