The race is part of the company’s social corporate responsibility programme.
Old Mutual is not new in athletics as they used to fund the Mbalabala 15km road race in conjunction with the Zimbabwe National Army. They also funded a 10km run in Bulawayo that started and finished at Nkulumane Complex with Samkeliso Moyo and Tendai Chinhanu among previous winners.
In an interview yesterday, the Bulawayo Athletics Board secretary Dailes Bingadadi confirmed registration and said they were excited to have Old Mutual back in the fold.
“As a board we are happy with the development as it gives our athletes a stage to compete and measure their state of preparedness. Registration is on and it is our hope that Bulawayo athletes will register in their numbers and make this event a success.
“Registration is free and it is being done at Old Mutual’s office at Nkulumane Complex and closes on Saturday,” Bingadadi said.
The race will start and finish at Nkulumane Complex.
Athletes will run along Masiyephambili towards Bellevue and make a u-turn at the Masiyephambili/Plumtree Road intersection and then race back to Nkulumane Complex to finish the race.
There have been a few races in Bulawayo with the Hope Fountain 30km road race which was held a fortnight ago being the only major event.
The other event lined up in the Bab calendar is the Nkulumane Spar 10km race set for 9 December.
Veteran runner Lewis Masunda won the men’s category of the Nkulumane Spar 10km race last year in a time of 27 minutes 33.36 seconds while Rutendo Nyahora beat 2011 Kujatana Nkubotu Peace Half Marathon winner Constance Nyasango in the women’s.
Nyahora clocked 32 minutes 41 seconds while Nyasango came home in 33 minute 34.73 seconds.
These athletes are some of the top runners expected to participate at the Old Mutual 10km road race.
