OLD Mutual yesterday donated 250 blankets to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo as part of its annual Winter Warmer Expo campaign, bringing much-needed warmth and comfort to patients and caregivers during the cold season.
The initiative, which has become a flagship programme for the financial services provider, aims to spread compassion and solidarity by donating blankets to institutions across the country during winter.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Old Mutual operations manager Ms Gladys Bugalo, said the campaign reflects the organisation’s deep commitment to community well-being.
“Today, as we witness the impact of this collective effort, we are reminded of the power we hold when we come together to serve. We hope these blankets bring comfort to your hearts as a reminder that you matter to us,” she said.
The Winter Warmer Expo campaign operates through a community-centred nomination process, where Old Mutual employees and members of the public suggest beneficiaries via digital platforms. This year, Mpilo Central Hospital and Jairos Jiri Centre were among the selected institutions.
Ms Bugalo said the initiative, which runs across all 10 provinces, is targeting the most vulnerable institutions.
“As we hand over 250 blankets to Mpilo Central Hospital, know that each blanket is more than just a layer of warmth, but it carries some of the values we live by at Old Mutual, which are respect, integrity and accountability hence this is what we bring to Mpilo Central Hospital a place that embodies compassion, resilience and community spirit,” she said.
Mpilo Central Hospital is one of the country’s largest referral hospitals, serving patients from Bulawayo, Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Midlands and parts of Masvingo.
The public institution handles several patients despite limited resources, especially during the winter months when demand for basic amenities like warm bedding increases.
Mpilo Central Hospital chief medical officer Dr Narcisius Dzvanga, welcomed the donation, saying it would go a long way in alleviating challenges faced by patients.
“We are so grateful that a big company like Old Mutual found it befitting to donate blankets to us. No donation is too big or too small, we are thankful for this gesture,” he said.
“Blankets are one of the items we constantly need, and during this winter, it has been a struggle. This support will make a real difference.”
