Old School Nights lives to expectation

A RELAXED, calm and mature atmosphere characterised the Old School Nights at Groove Night Club featuring two veteran DJs, Joe the OG and Kaycee the Gigmaster.The show was held on Friday night. It brought out people who wanted to relieve their young past.

The duo played a mixture of R’n’B, hip hop and soul tracks from the early, mid and late 80s, 90s and 2000s that had people on the dance floor until they left in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

The nimble-footed unleashed old time dances such as the running man, American Shuffle, cabbage while others were break dancing.

Entering the venue, one would just see that this was not a show for those below 25, as it was filled with people who are managers, business people and some captains of the Bulawayo industry.

Most of the men were wearing smart casual and the women were the ones who went all out and wore party dresses and jeans with heels and had clutch purses.

Joe the OG started the night with a slow tempo as he played tracks like Kool and the Gang, Celebration, All Night Long by Lionel Richie and Too Close by Next.

Organisers of the show seem to have hit the right chord as they catered for those who wanted to have their drinks in a relaxed environment listening to yester year beats and discussing business at the same time.

In addition, there was a need for a place where the more mature crowd can go to and not be mixed with the youth who tend to be rowdy when they have had one to many.

Kaycee the Gigmaster came on at around 10.30pm and like his counterpart Joe the OG started off slow and mellow with tunes such as Mike Morrison and Return of the Mack Kool.

As the night wore on, his set embodied the meaning of building a DJ set gradually, as Kaycee the Gigmaster increased the tempo until the whole night club was on their feet.

He then played South African music from the era of D-Gong, then kwaito, with tracks from Trompies, Ma Willis and Arthur Mafokate.

After the show Joe the OG said judging by the crowd that turned up they were going to consider doing more shows in the future.

“Kaycee and I have been talking and we have arranged that we will have such shows in the future. I think there is a market that we were not servicing and now we are through these shows,” he said.

Joe the OG said the Old School nights were for the mature to catch up with their friends because they would be busy during the week.
