ZIMBABWE Olympic Committee president Admire Masenda and chief executive officer Anna Mguni were expected to leave Zimbabwe for Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire to attend the African National Olympic Committees  (ANOCA) general assembly. The annual general meeting coincides with the elections in which Zimbabwean Tommy Sithole is vying for the secretary-general’s post.

In an interview on Tuesday Mguni confirmed that she would be traveling to West Africa with the ZOC president. The assembly starts tomorrow and ends on Sunday. A good turn out is expected at the event as the elections are expected to chart a new path forward for the organization which is eager to see Africa play host to the Olympics within the next decade.

“I will be traveling for the assembly meeting with Masenda. It runs from Friday to Sunday and besides the usual business there will also be elections in which Sithole is eyeing a position. We all wish Tommy the very best for this very critical continental post,” said Mguni.

Sithole has been the International Olympic Committee director of international co-operation and development. Hopes are high that he would land the post. His exposure to the Switzerland-based organisation’s headquarters would benefit Africa.

Meanwhile, Mguni said the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee will be represented by herself at next week’s Olympic Day Celebrations in Bulawayo.

ZOC this year gave Bulawayo the chance to use the day to market the forthcoming Zimbabwe National Youth Games.

“We are coming to Bulawayo for the celebrations. As ZOC we are happy with the event coming to Bulawayo and we are in constant touch with the organising committee,” said Mguni.

A number of activities have been lined for 20 July at White City Stadium at which some past Olympic participants who are Zimbabweans would be exhibited.

ZOC are funding the day’s celebrations.
