ONE person died while two others were injured after a trailer detached from a public service vehicle and hit three pedestrians along Plumtree Road near Belmont in Bulawayo on Monday afternoon.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the accident, which occurred around 1.30PM.

She said a 36-year-old man from Nkulumane suburb was driving a Benz Sprinter, with one passenger on board, towards the south-western direction. The vehicle was towing an unregistered trailer when the incident occurred.

“On approaching Lobels factory, the trailer disengaged from the vehicle and struck three adult male pedestrians who were walking along the road after knocking off from work,” said Inspector Msebele.

The injured were rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital where one of the victims, Tongoreva Tavengwa (53), died upon admission. The other two remained hospitalised as of yesterday.

Police have since launched investigations into the accident.

Inspector Msebele urged motorists, particularly those towing trailers, to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and all connections are properly secured.

“We appeal to all motorists to be vigilant on the roads, especially in areas with high pedestrian traffic. Those towing trailers must regularly inspect and secure all attachments to avoid disengagements that can lead to such tragic incidents,” she said.
