adminThursday last week when a Sun Runner speed boat registration number KA 2429 owned by Delta Company that was being steered by Ozias Maneta (29) hit the other one steered by Andrew Sanganai (34).
Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the accident adding that investigations were still in progress.
“Yes two speed boats collided in Lake Kariba and one of them capsized leading to the death one person while the other one was injured,” he said.
The two coxswain boats were escorting the Zambezi Traders houseboat with tourists on board who wanted to dock for the night.
The two speedboats sped towards the shoreline in search of a suitable place for the houseboat to anchor.
The boat that was being steered by Sanganai bumped into the one steered by Maneta.
The boat was damaged on impact and it capsized while Maneta sustained deep cuts in the groin, forehead and right knee.
Sanganai’s boat was partially damaged but was used to rescue the sinking boat and Maneta who however, died while being taken to the lakeshore. He was taken to Lake Harvest harbour where a police report was made before his body was taken to Kariba district hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
Inspector Mabgweazara urged people to observe regulations governing their mode of transportation and avoid excitement.
“We are dealing with machines that place a heavy burden on us humans to ensure that we safely use them for our benefit and that of others,” he said.
