Former India fielding coach R Sridhar was in awe of Glenn Maxwell after the star all-rounder performed another remarkable one-man Houdini act to help Australia beat India by five wickets in the third T20 International on Tuesday.
Sridhar stated that only Maxwell could pull off an innings like this after his unbeaten 104 off 48 balls ensured that Australia were able to overhaul India’s mammoth total of 222 for 3 and stay alive in the five-match T20I series.
“You could expect this kind of innings only from someone like Maxwell. Obviously, there were a couple of other good performances like Ruturaj’s innings and Jason Behrendorff’s 1/12 in 4 overs, but Maxwell was definitely the top performer of the day.
“He’s got that belief that he’ll pull off something like this all the time when he goes into bat, and the kind of power he generates through his bat swing is quite amazing.
“Each time I look at his technique, it never ceases to amaze me. Because the way that bottom hand comes down and the speed he generates is magnificent. Also, he’s got a new shot in his repertoire where he goes well outside the line of the ball and hits it over the leg side, especially behind square,” Sridhar said while speaking on JioCinema.
Maxwell’s innings served as a fast reminder of his historic double century against Afghanistan in the recent 50-over World Cup, in which he single-handedly pushed his team to victory. His hundred on this night wasn’t particularly impressive in terms of volume or frequency, but it gave Australia a footing in the series.
Maxwell had to play this knock in some ways because he gave up 30 runs in the penultimate over of India’s innings, which helped the hosts reach a huge total. Needing 21 runs off the last over bowled by pacer Prasidh Krishna, Maxwell sealed the deal with one six and three fours, completing his fourth T20I century. – India Today.
