THE recent strike by doctors has delayed the opening of the renal unit at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital, which is expected to improve access to quality care.

Installation of the dialysis equipment has been completed while training of personnel to manage the process is ongoing with some seconded to Chitungwiza Central Hospital for refresher training.

Chitungwiza is also expected to provide a doctor and some nurses to oversee the initial stages of the unit’s operations.

Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital medical superintendent Dr Collett Mawire said the renal unit would be open by end of this month following several setbacks.

“This is good news to all patients that require renal dialysis. Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital renal unit is now expected to start operating by end of April into the first week of May,” he said.

“The doctors’ strike resulted in some delays while other setbacks resulted in us failing to commission the unit end of last year as anticipated.”

Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital is expecting a physician from their team to travel to Egypt soon for a five-day training course on how to manage dialysis patients.

The unit at Mashonaland West province’s biggest referral hospital will ensure dialysis services are provided closer to the patients and at affordable costs.

People with various kidney ailments have to travel to Harare for the sessions which allow them to live productive lives.
