Opposition parties have nothing to offer

OPPOSITION parties in Zimbabwe have nothing to offer to the electorate, a reason why they are calling for elections boycotts.

In an unsolicited interview on Wednesday, losing Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn candidate for Dangamvura-Chikanga constituency, Mr Fugamai Mawire, who has turned his back to the party to rejoin Zanu-PF, said all opposition parties were just good at lip-syncing.

Mr Mawire unsuccessfully campaigned to represent the Dangamvura-Chikanga constituency twice in 2013 and 2015 under the Dr Simba Makoni-led doomed MKD project.

During the June 10 by-election, Mr Mawire was among seven opposition candidates who were vanquished by Zanu-PF candidate, Cde Isau Mupfumi as he (Mawire) managed to poll a paltry 254 votes, compared to Cde Mupfumi’s 6 376 votes.

“Opposition parties in Zimbabwe should simply keep quiet because they are perennial failures.

“Yes, it is good for democracy to have oppositions in a country, but having part of the opposition movement for some time now, they are just good a lip-syncing.

“They are shallow in policies and in short they just sing for their supper.

“The call to boycott future elections is being done by people bankrupt of ideas, those who are not serious in everything.

“Having taken a deep soul searching I decided to retrace my roots back to the party with Zimbabweans at heart, Zanu-PF.

“I was not forced or coerced, but I just realised that there is no future in opposition politics.

“In actual fact, I was coerced to represent MKD during the past two plebiscites.

“Some people wanted to ride on the back of my popularity especially in Dangamvura where I come from,” he said.

Focusing on MKD, Mr Mawire described the party as a joke and said it revolved around Dr Makoni only.

“Since 2013, the party has never organised a single meeting to chart the way forward.

“It is suffering from leadership crisis.

“The only person that is known in the party is Dr Simba Makoni.

“There are no structures.

“You cannot expect much from a private entity like MKD.

“For me to contest the by-elections, I bankrolled most of my campaigns including paying the nomination fees.

A volunteer in the party used his own resources to print campaigning posters and fliers that we used in the June 10 by-elections.

“The party did not offer anything, save for empty promises of mobilising resources,” he said.

When asked why he continued holding on to the party bankrupt of policies and resources, Mr Mawire, said: “From 2013, I was coerced to represent the party.

“The same happened again during the June 10 by-elections. It had to take a lot of persuasion from MDK members for me to stand.

“They argued that it was my best chance to win the elections saying Zanu-PF had a weak candidate in Cde Mupfumi.

“I made the decision to contest on the 11th hour, but I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Cde Mupfumi and Zanu-PF for the well deserved victory.”

Mr Mawire who was a war collaborator during the liberation struggle said he was ready to work for Zanu-PF in any capacity.

“Yes, some people might label me a mercenary, but they are entitled to their opinions.

“I am back home (Zanu-PF) for good. I will never turn my back again to the party I served before and after independence.

“The prevailing situation in the party during the time I left forced me to quit it, but I am now happy that things are now moving in Zanu-PF. I will never jump ship again because home is always the best.

“I will use my energy to help in strengthening the party.

Mr Mawire becomes the second candidate among those who contested for the Dangamvura-Chikanga constituency to rejoin Zanu-PF after Mr Maxwell Teedzai of Transform Zimbabwe threw in the towel a few days before the June 10 by-election in what shoes the resurgence of the ruling party.
