Thirteen former opposition parties’ supporters based in South Africa have defected to Zanu-PF as the growing interest to join the revolutionary party continues among youths. The defectors were from the Mthwakazi Liberation Front, MDC-T, MDC and Zapu.This comes after the Zanu-PF leadership in South Africa engaged opposition supporters on a one-on-one encounter and through campaigns to educate them about the history of Zimbabwe and the liberation struggle.
In a statement to Zanu-PF national chairman and Senior Minister of State Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo, Zanu-PF South African branch chairman Cde Ndabezihle Nyoni said among the defectors were MLF youth executive member Ali Ncube, five Zapu supporters, three from the MLF and five from the MDCs.
He said a list of people interested in joining Zanu-PF has been compiled and submitted to the party.
“These defectors have indicated to the party that they will be surrendering their regalia and cards on November 23,” said Cde Nyoni.
“I urge the new party members to respect the unity of Zimbabweans to ensure peace and development. The signing of the Unity Accord was a fulfilment of the ideas and objectives of the liberation struggle which was fought by Zipra and Zanla to cement the unity of the people of Zimbabwe.”
Cde Nyoni said Zimbabweans should heed the call by President Mugabe for the people to be masters of their own destiny through the utilisation of resources.
He said the new members requested to be taught the history of Zimbabwe and the liberation struggle which they said had been greatly distorted by opposition parties and Western-sponsored organisations.
A number of members of opposition parties are also rejoining Zanu-PF in various parts of the country after realising that the parties they supported were not progressive.
