HARARE — The Organ for National Healing, Reconciliation and Integration (ONHRI) yesterday urged people to maintain peace in the post-election period. Zimbabweans went to the polls on Wednesday to elect a president, members of parliament and local government representatives.
In a statement, ONHRI said whatever the outcome of the poll, people should refrain from violence.
“The Organ for National Healing, Reconciliation and Integration is encouraging Zimbabweans from all walks of life to observe peace and uphold tolerance before, during and after the 2013 harmonised elections.”
“Say no to violence today,” it said.
Police said 120 people had been arrested countrywide for committing various election-related offences, including stealing voters’ rolls and illegally entering the country to cause mayhem.
The run-up to the election was largely peaceful, with no major incidents of violence reported. — New Ziana
