JOHANNESBURG. — Orlando Pirates appear to be back in the race for Mamelodi Sundowns’ want-away Zimbabwean striker Nyasha Mushekwi. Last week the Siya crew revealed that the Zimbabwean has not been training with the Downs squad and is looking to hold out and see his contract expire with the Brazilians.
The 28-year-old has been linked with a move to the Buccaneers since 2013 and with the striker in the final year of his contract at Chloorkop, it appears as though Pirates have reignited their interest in him.
Mushekwi has also been linked with a move abroad, however, the latest news reaching the Siya crew has indicated that Bucs could make a swoop for the player as soon as January as he wants to leave Sundowns as soon as possible.
“The team (Bucs) has been interested in Nyasha for a long time and in the past they have been frustrated by their counterpart’s wish not to sell the player to any local club. He will soon be out of contract and Sundowns could lose him for free,” the source said.
“Pirates are ready to step in and bring him to the club if the opportunity comes their way. They still believe in him and if he is not training with Sundowns, that means he also wants to move so things could be easier for Pirates this time around.”
Meanwhile, Halmstad striker Matthew Rusike is likely to remain in the Swedish Allsvenskan next season, despite his team being relegated from Sweden’s top-flight last weekend.
The 25-year-old has managed to grab four goals in his last nine games for struggling Halmstad, however, has not been able to help them avoid the drop, something that was confirmed by a last minute own-goal from one of his teammates on Sunday.
However, while the Zimbabwean will be disappointed about his side’s failure to stay in the Allsvenskan this year, it appears that he will not be following them down to the Superettan, with a whole host of clubs said to be interested in signing him.
Rusike has already confirmed to the Swedish media that he will be leaving Halmstad once their season comes to an end, and it is thought that he will be a free agent at the end of December.
While the exact teams that are interested in Rusike, following an impressive start to his career in Europe, are not yet known, it is believed that he will not be short of options in Sweden come the start of 2016. — Laduma.
