Zimbabwean cinema continues to scale new heights, with the acclaimed local film RISE qualifying for consideration at the 98th Academy Awards (Oscars), scheduled for March 15, 2026.
The film, which made history in July when it became the first Zimbabwean production to debut at the prestigious Tribeca Festival in New York, has since maintained its global momentum. Written and directed by Jessica Rowlands and produced by Joe Njagu, RISE stars seasoned Hollywood actor Tongai Chirisa alongside award-winning young talent Sikhanyiso Ngwenya. The cinematography was handled by Jacques Naudé.
To be shortlisted for Oscar consideration marks a major milestone for Zimbabwe’s film industry, making RISE the first Zimbabwean-made film to advance to this level on the path to Hollywood’s biggest stage.
RISE is inspired by the real-life story of Victoria Falls boxing coach Tobias Mupfuti, who transformed personal tragedy into strength by dedicating his life to developing vulnerable youths through sport and shelter.
The film follows a battered street boy, played with striking depth by Ngwenya, who is rescued and trained for a major boxing tournament. What begins as a reluctant relationship evolves into an emotional journey of healing, identity and survival inside and outside the ring.
