JAILED television personality Oscar Pambuka spent part of Valentine’s Day distributing flyers to motorists along ED Mnangagwa Road in Harare.
He was in the company of musician and comedian Yaya Saru.
Pambuka, who said inmates often struggle to receive visits from friends and family, encouraged people to visit those serving sentences in prison.
“I am happy to mingle with members of the community on this Valentine’s Day.
“We are one people, one love and my message is ‘please visit us in prison.’
“We have a number of inmates not getting love from their families and friends.
“Huyaiwo muzovaona ndakumbirisa.
“Husungwa hunopera, tinobuda kudzoka kumba.”
Some motorists stopped to greet Pambuka, while some pedestrians took selfies with him.
Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Meya Khanyezi, said they had decided to use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity for inmates to meet members of the community, as part of their “rehabilitation and reintegration process”.
“We cannot manage inmates alone. It needs collective responsibility to correct inmates since they come from society and return to society.
“We are appealing to people to visit their loved ones serving jail terms in various prisons,” said Chief Supt Khanyezi.
